301 Redirect - Permanent server redirect, used in the htaccess file it shows a replacement URL for a deleted page to the search engine spiders.

Anchor Text - The text used to describe a link. In SEO anchor text are used to increase your rankings for your targeted keywords.

Authority - Authority sites are websites that rank highly for a specific keyword thanks to their updated unique content and many incoming links from related sites.

Back Link - A link to your site from another website.

Black Hat - Search engine optimization techniques to trick the search engines into thinking that a site is an authority in the subject. Some techniques used by black hat seos are link spamming, keyword stuffing and cloaking.

Blog - Started as online diaries, blogs became popular for the simplicity they provide to the webmaster to add updated content and news.

Bot - An automated software. Search engines use spiders (which are bots) to find and add web pages to their indexes.

Cloaking - A black hat technique to show the search engine a different webpage than the one shown to the user.

Comment Spam - Unrelated or unwanted comments in blogs post to increase backlinks.

CPC (Cost Per Click) - the fee charged by PPC engines for every click received.

Crawler - An automated software used by search engines to spider websites following links and indexing content. Search engines use spiders are also referred as crawlers.

Directory - A human edited site which lists in the form of a directory websites divided into categories.

Feed(rss) - A form to distribute content by using a special code.

Google Bowling - It is said to be a myth. It is the act of lowering your competitors rankings by doing off site optimization using black hat techniques.

Google Dance - The moment when different google datacenters show different search results do to a major update in google algorithms and or databases.

In Bound Link - The same as a back link.

Indexed Pages - The pages in a website that are present in a search engine database.

Inlink - The same as a back link.

Keyword Research - The research to determine which keywords with an existing search volume are appropriate for your targeted audience.

Keyword Stuffing (keyword spam) - High keyword density in a website trying to trick the search engines.

Link Exchange - Reciprocal backlinks between webmaster. I link to you you link to me.

Link Partner - The webmaster or site that is linking back to you in a reciprocal linking scheme.

Link Popularity - The number of back links a website has indexed in the search engines. The higher the link popularity the better chances of ranking high for the targeted keyword.

META Tags - Html codes at in the head section of a website which includes title, description, keywords and other non common tags such as the name of the author and the language of the site.

Natural Search Results - Search Engine Results shown by the website optimization and not paid for.

Nofollow - Html command that specify to a search engines not to follow or to give any importance to a specific link.

NoIndex - Html command to prevent indexing of a webpage by the search engines spiders. Can be placed in the head section of the website or in the robots.txt file.

Non Reciprocal Link (one way links) - A link from a website without a link back to them. Site A links to B but B doesn't link to A. Search Engines consider one way links more relevant.

Pagerank (PR) - A value between 0 to 10 given by google considering the authority of a website based on backlinks and content.

PPA (Pay Per Action) - Similar to pay per click but the publisher only gets paid if the click results in a purchase or sign up.

PPC (Pay Per Click) - A form of advertising where the webmaster pays the publisher for every click it delivers.

Robots.txt - A text file in the root directory of a website used to control and guide search engine spiders.

Sandbox - A time before a new website is allowed to rank by the major search engines after indexing. It is not prooved and is considered a myth.

Scrape - Using bots to copy content from several sources and adding it exactly the same to a website without the author permission.

SE - Abbreviation for Search Engine.

SEM - Abbrevation for Search Engine Marketing.

SEO - Abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization.

SERP - Abbreviation for Search Engine Results Page.

Site Map - A page that shows the structure of a website to spiders and users. Most common formats are html and xml. Xml is mostly used for search engine spiders.

URL - Abbreviation for Uniform Resource Locator or more commonly Web Address
